Hydroponics and Aquaponics are transforming the way plants are grown. These simple, efficient systems can be adapted for large commercial use and small home aquariums, and allow for lush, beautiful plant growth without the need for soil.
Hydroponics is simply growing plants in a solution of water and nutrients, without soil. All of the elements that a plant needs is added to the water and fed directly to the roots. Using the ideal ratio of nutrients and water, the plant receives the ultimate conditions for growth. Using hydroponics can provide for local, organically grown food all year round.
Aquaponics is the combination of fish farming and hydroponics. It uses the nutrient rich water that naturally occurs in an aquarium to feed the plants, and the plants in turn purify the water by removing the nutrients from it. A mini ecosystem is created that benefits both the plants and the fish, and is self-sustaining.
